National public guarantees

In addition to public guarantees provided by European institutions, guarantees are provided by public banks at the national and regional level. Most European Member States have their own set of public guarantees that are available for specified sectorial projects or businesses. These guarantees usually focus on projects or businesses that support the government’s policy ambitions.

What is the relevance for Circular City initiatives?

Since sustainability is a priority on most national policy agendas, public guarantees tend to support projects and businesses that foster the transitions to a green and circular economy. Certain countries and regions have a guarantee scheme specifically on the circular economy:

Finnvera – Environmental Guarantee

The Finnish public bank Finnvera has a guarantee instrument dedicated to environmental protection. Certain circular economy initiatives are eligible.

Fonds Bruxellois de Garantie

This Brussels’ guarantee fund has a guarantee instrument dedicated to funding green investments and supporting circular initiatives.

The Czech-Moravian Guarantee and Development Bank

This institution offers guarantees for sustainable development in the Czech Republic, also supporting circular economy initiatives.
